HOUSE OF DANTE

John Keehan and Barbara Kemp

Its opened his door in 1967 and was successful, the address was " HOUSE OF DANTE" 2558 W. Superior in West Town. he opened it right after the tournament in 1967 at Lane Tech. John true love was women he was addicted to them. So whats a better way to do this but to open a hair salon. What people don't realize is he was an accomplished make up artist. This was one of his business that he never touched illegally at all. He was so good that he had to hire several hair stylists to run the salon full time. At this time business flourished, he was booked solid and then he started to teach some of his clients self defense. So his name got bigger and bigger.

He did one girls hair, her name was Jennifer Jackson who was in the March 1965 issue of playboy she was the first African American to grace Playboy. He became so good that he made house calls to the Playboy mansion.And then he started to work their from time to time, because the girls loved him so much. And love them he did two or three at the time. I always wondered were did this guy have time to sleep, he had some much going on.

Later House of Dante expanded to Spain and Italy were John opened salons their and would fly out and do International models and cover shoots and newspaper ad's in Madrid. This helped when traveling with his import export business. House of Dante made 102,000 dollars in 1967 per his tax returns for that year. And almost doubled that the following two years after that. Not bad for cutting and styling. Their were more celebrities in Chicago were John Keehan would do their hair and make-up. One of John keehan good friends and clients was a guy named Mayor Daley. John use to do his wifes hair and also Jack Bennys wife too.

John was well liked in these circles and its was great exposure for him. But John made more money cutting hair at the exclusive South Shore Counrty Club 7509 South Shore Drive were his mother and father were life members their. He made a killing their having a salon he shared with the club and the exposure and advertising were awesome their. They were the Chicago elite and they all loved John in these circles. Also many of the mafia were club members there also includine Giancana , Arcaddo and Roselli. their a fine line between politics and crime I guess.

I'm gonna outline this a certain way, sometimes I came across so aggressive you really couldn't understand what I was saying. I know that now, and understand a simple pause and control will get a better effect.





I remember John Keehan so clearly for years back. I remember him standing in the mirror, he was so hyped here, he did demonstrations and demonstrations here. I watched the transformation of John Keehan to Count Dante when he was standing in my fathers bathroom. I really never understood as a child, what he was really doing. I always around him and my father riding around in his big Cadillac with the Dante crest on the door. But you here things, you do as a kid right, I heard things right out of his mouth John Keehans, in alot of ways. I never understood then.





It was about 14 when I really put it together, the names the places the times. See Billys father Bill Jr had it all tucked away the paperwork. And only certain people could see it. I'm gonna outline a little of what I know. NOW I'm gonna piss people off. I'm gonna go to certain times in history, and answer some question about me and Billy.

1. Me and Billy are not partners in the Federal Lawsuit, my so called business arrangement I wanna open a school here with him and go from their. Their are alot of people here who respect Billy and his father. And my father too, Floyd Webb once said Ashida kim kept the BDFS alive farther than Bill Jr. Did Ashida Kim have a school for 40 years NO, Bill Jr did and it was strong for alot of years, at least at my time. Lawrence Day was one of the Chicago three, I told my father what Floyd Webb said about Day being outside the night of the dojo war, he said DAM RIGHT HE WAS the fucking coward.John Keehan said he was the weakest of the three. Its funny Lawrence Day was never in the WKF and know he wants to be in a fake IBDFS. Just goes to figure, I talked to him he talks like he smokes 5 packs a day.
7. Marc Lully aka El Shitan if you see the two pictures on the left of the video, were painted by Marc Lully back in 1968 Dante's and 1969 William V Aguiar Jr. There was a cosmic John painting huge at least 5 feet by 6 feet thats burned in the school fire in 1976.
8. Bertauix his church in the Fine Arts building has been their for 60 years, and was given or ordained by Manuel C . Lampartner, Ya a voodoo gnostic right! If you like young children. Woodrow Edgell, I like Woody but he had no school, the Ju-te school he had, was out of the 8111 and Ashland school, Thats right John Keehans school he was out of the same building and dojo the same dojo just a different door. Thats letter that Floyd posted from Edgell makes me laugh, when he said he helped John keehan with classes. and at Keehan had a 7TH dan in Ju-te
10. Lets not forget Art Rapkin who had a hell of a time explaining where the tournament money went. Ask him why he was suing Keehan for 100,000 in 1969.

SIX MONTHS LATER IN JOHN KEEHAN LIFE

Its 1967 John Keehan had alot going on in his life. He was preparing for the 1967 Championships sponsored and organized by him. This is the second time that William V Aguiar Jr and John F Creeden Jr and 3 others went to Chicago, they were George Owens, Herman Mederious, and Tommy Kirker. After a series of letter were exchanged. They went to Michigan and trained with a superb Judoka name John Osaka. Who trained John Keehan for several years prior. Who was fielding Judo champions since the early 60's. This is the time that everyone from Fall River met Jim Konsevic and a his best friend Jane Orr. My fathers said the Konsevic was built like a frigging brick wall. And he was a brawler.

After training with Johnny Osaka and Konsevic and Orr in Michigan. They went back to Chicago area and met a 3 degree black belt in the World Karate Federation at the time and ex Chicago Cubs baseball player named Ellis Burton. A good old boy my fathers states with a laugh, what an excellant practitioner and a class act. He was retired from baseball for a couple of years at the time. He loved Shori Goju. My father states that John Keehan had an autographed picture over his desk from the Ashland school for years. Here's a link to his stats.

I found this baseball card it was from the early days when he was with the Cardinals.
Keehan was geared to travel he wanted to go to the 1967 Long Beach Invitational. Which he did attend with William Jr and John F Creeden Jr. Their friendships grew very fast and strong. Their views on the arts were very much the same. They started to bash the purists and the classic karate men who never understood their philosophies about mixed training. Keehan started to get backlash about mixed training, because Keehan started to see the flaws in just on style.

Bruce Lee also appeared at the 1967 Long Beach International Karate
Championships and performed various demonstrations, including the famous
"unstoppable punch" with USKA world karate champion Vic Moore. Bruce would
announce to Vic Moore that he was going to throw a straight punch to his
face,
and all he had to do was block it. He would take several steps back
and ask if
Moore was ready, when Moore nodded in affirmation, Lee would
glide towards him
until he was within striking range. He would then throw a
straight punch
directly at Moore's face and stop before impact. In eight
attempts, Moore
blocked zero punches.

They played hard at this time. Watching matches and demonstrations. they met
Edmund Parked and Phil Koppel, and Robert Trais and several movie stars at the
time who were intrested in the arts.

Also Keehan and friends attended the June 25 1967 All-American Karate
Championships at Madison Square Garden were Bruce Lee preforms as Kato in front
of a crowd of thousands. In 1967, during the "All American Karate Championships"
at the Madison Square Garden, Chuck Norris beats Hiroshi Nakamura, Then chuck
Norris beats Joe Lewis for the overall title.

Threw all the fun my father states that something was troubling John Keehan. he was having problems with certain individuals from Calumet, pertaining to the adult movie houses and adult book stores That were owned by Marc Lully. Its all had to do with money and payments and kick backs from one to another. He was also having problems with his girlfriend at the time a girl named Cheryl Swanson, she was a cocktail waitress from one of the clubs, who had a severe drug problem back then. It was this girl who introduced John Keehan to Christa Konrath. And she was using Keehans name to try to get what she wanted. So Keehan had alot of personal headaches.

My father says that Keehan was having sex with Cheryl and she would have a bottle of Amiel nitrate or Amies under her nose while having sex with John. John Keehan was never into hard drugs , some marijuana and Navy Grog thats it for John.

And the stess of putting on the 1967 World Championships was extremely streesful for him.

Also at this time he spoke to Billy and my father about religion and his involvement with Lully. Who were both consecrated in Hyde Park by Bertrauix, Mark Lully and John Keehan in 1967 shared the same consecration and ordinations.

He also discusses the mail order business with Billy Jr and John F Creeden Jr and how they could become partners in the mail order business. I ask my father how come you guys and not someone in Chicago. He states that John Keehan was becoming a thorn in their side of the Chicago arts scene at the time. With conduct un-becoming to the arts by the purists in the martial arts in Chicago at the time. Especially Ken Knudson who had 6 schools in the greater Chicago area.

1967 was a turning point in Johns life alot changes in this years his view and the way he looks at thing's

DURING THEIR TIME THEIR in 1966 and 1967

After training and training, They went to see some schools and talked about the martial arts business over dinner and how the martial arts would someday peak especially the number of schools in the greater Chicago area. See my father explains "the World Karate Federation is a Federation of black belts under one umbrella" they all had their own schools. But it was a tough thing to do, especially with the different stylists who really didn't respect each other. So John had a rough go at it from the start.

I talked to my father about time frame something that Floyd Webb has mentioned,

he explain it like this. When you talk about "The Rangers" and Hamilton and
Seale and the "Panthers", they weren't their over night. The Chicago city
especially in the central projects in Chicago they had well oiled well versed
soldiers as gang members. The gangs ran everything and they probably still
do,These gang are really a spin off of the cultural revolution out of the 60's
in a way, ask Russel Brown at the time he was a cop in Chicago he'll tell you.
But those's guys in the 60's and 70's were infrantry men from Vietnam hardcore
grunts. They were the fathers of the modern street gang in Chicago. They didn't
like going from a snake pit to another so they fought back the it was along
struggle. Floyd and anyone living in Chicago dealt with one way or another with
those huge projects their

Listen their were the Blackstone Rangers under Jeff Fort and their was the "Vice Lords" and the "Disciples" at the run by Larry Hoover and David Barksdale. They were out of the Lawndale area at the time. People seem to think that John was exclusive to the Rangers he wasn't if their was money to be made, John went to make the money and thats it. See John walked a fine line , you got to understand the situation in Chicago at the time. You couldn't work the streets with out being involved one way or another with the gangs.

Most of the militant blacks were coming to John and his black belts to use the
art in the struggle. And John understood that. These street gang were different,
the 60's street gangs in Chicago had community out reach programs and free
lunches in their neighborhoods

John was a good old boy, people need to respect his accomplishments, did he
bullshit, ya most people do, did he have a loud mouth most people do. Did he
make stupid mistakes and make really bad judgements, ya he did. But the mind of
the man was so articulate with his business presentations and the way he carried
himself. No one could match him.

IN THE DAYS FOLLOWING

In the following days they trained day after day they trained at the 1132 W. Thorndale school. Which at the time was the as my father puts it a Yukan-na Shishi club run by a black belt named Gus Ascetti and the head instructor named John Kotsias. Who were 1st dans in the WKF at the time. My father said this guy Kotsias was awesome, he also was an awesome black belt in Kwon do Korean karate.

At the time Billy and my father and others wanted in The WKF at the time so Keehan set up matches with some hardcore students at the time at the 8111 South Ashland school. John Keehan said step on the mat like your in a bar room. They fought almost 4 hours with Keehan throwing them new fresh students to fight against. Over the course of these matches their was blood and broken bones.

And of course William Jr last match was Andy Wilson. A big Black man who smoked Billy Jr and several of Keehans students and Billy Jr students and they fought and fought. If you notice the patch on William Jr's eye. Andy Wilson hit him with a shuto and split him over the eye needing 6 stitches that Keehan himself did fix. My father fought a guys named Wally Miller and John Black. My father said you remember the guys who gave you a run for your money.

So after all the fighting they partied and partied they did. They went to see the dragon lady of Rush Street Barbara Kemp she got some girls from the south side. After that they almost died Andy Wilson was so drunk that almost flipped Keehan car on the Dan Ryan expressway. This is when they were introduced to Fred Hamilton and Bobby Seale of the Black panther party. My father still uses the term "Power comes out of a barrel of a gun". He loved those guys when I showed him Fred Hamilton F.B.I report. My father hates when the establishment kills people for their involvement in bettering the communities. He always says still to this day that" democracy kills revolutionaries.

My father is still pissed with the killing of Bobby Hutton in Oakland in 1968 were Eldridge Clever was wounded. William Jr and My father use to go to New Haven Conn in the 1970's to support the Panthers trail. It had to do with the suspected murder of Alex Rackley who the Panthers thought was a police informant.

John Keehan and William V Aguiar Jr how they met.

In 1965 William V Aguiar Jr was training at the Mount Hope Judo Club. With Chip Camara , Paul Barbosa, Paul Bilsky and John F Creeden Jr. They all worked at Raytheon in Newport, Rhode Island on the Newport Navy base. They were also training with a Korean Black Belt named Heil Cho out of Providence, Rhode Island. And they also trained with a Kempo black belt named Nick Cerio and another Kempo Black belt named Billy Marsharelli who at the time owned an attack dog service in the area. It was Billy Marsharelli who jumped up at the Taunton death matches and challenged Keehan/Dante to a match.

On a lazy Saturday a childhood friend of William V Aguiar Jr named Miguel Luigi DiFonzo came by for some beers and to catch up on old times at the new Rock street school that William V Aguiar Jr had just opened. While talking William Jr was reading a Chicago newspaper that DiFonzo brought with him and he saw an ad for the 1965 championships. Billy at the time was teaching a mixed martial arts style that was frowned upon by the purists, namely Fred Vallari and Charlie Url.

So he mailed a letter to 1132 West Thorndale. It took about a week to get a reply. But John Keehan letter was more like a challenge than an invitation. They exchanged several more letters and in the coming months in 1966, 5 Black belts from New England visited John Keehan at the 8111 South Asland school. They were John F Creeden Jr, Paul Sousa, Don Wood, Joe Lamothe and William V Aguiar Jr.

John Keehan was so impressed that he laughed uncontrollably for 5 minutes, and Don Wood asked why. Keehan replied no ones never showed up never. They stood their for a couple of months living out of the school and training 3 times a day and partying at Keehans apartment in Tiara Apartments. That's when they met Andy Wilson, Edward Miller, Robert Gore, Jim Konsevice, Jane Orr, Tom Sexton and James Cheetam. and many others. And they would travel to Chicago another 30 times.

My farther laughs and said we won't even speak of New Jersey with Kareem Allah. A good friend of my fathers.

It was in these months that Aguiar jr and Creeden Jr were introduced to some people Keehan knew from the Woodlawn area.Who eventually would form the Black Stone P nation. And they were introduced to Keehan partner Marc Lully who owned a series of porno house and adult book stores in Chicago. { Billy III still has lighting equipment with Lully's name on it} My father was surprised that a white man has such sway with the black street gangs. That's were so violent and militant towards white establishment. But John Keehan walked as a friend and businessman and teacher amongst the black community. And at least for a time well respected in 1966.
These were crazy times especially in Chicago at the time . I put the picture of Malcom X on because it shows to me that the sign of the times in America were extremely volatile and violent. Lets face it my fathers said a black man at the time needed to defend himself by any means necessary for self preservation. He stated that they could go to Vietnam and get killed, but you couldn't walk down the street.
